Township of Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey

MyRepublic Rewards Program

With the inception of the MyRepublic Rewards program, residents are encouraged to utilize the “pay-as-you-throw” program.  Residents who presently receive curbside pickup through the Township’s contract with Raritan Valley Disposal (RVD), will now have a 96 gallon cart (at no additional cost) to be used for single-stream recycling.  This should leave residents with very little household trash, keeping the sticker cost to a minimum.

Republic Rewards, developed by Republic Services, Readington Township’s waste and recycling provider, residents can earn points for signing up for the program and for every recycling pick up, plus bonus points for other activities and reporting through the program’s web site: Through the free program, participants gain instant access to rewards, discounted offers, as well as premium rewards that can be redeemed with both local and national businesses.

Additionally, participants can use their points to vote for civic improvement projects benefiting Readington Township residents and visitors alike. The projects, to be announced by Mayor Julia Allen later this year, will be funded by a grant from Republic Services. “We believe this program will inspire residents to recycle more, while offering them an opportunity to become involved in important community improvement projects,” say Mayor Julia Allen, Readington Township.

As a reminder, our contract with RVD offers residents two (2) options for CURBSIDE TRASH PICKUP:

1. Pay-as-you-throw Program (stickers):

Property owner / homeowner purchases stickers directly from RVD (908-730-7800) or at one of the following locations:  Kings, Bishops, Flemington and Branchburg ShopRite, Flemington Stop n Shop.

With the pay-as-you-throw program, one (1) sticker is placed on each 25 lb. bag of household trash at curbside.  The price of a sticker may vary from time-to-time based on transfer station “tipping” fees.  Presently the cost is $1.00/sticker.  This program is the most cost-effective.

Years back, the Readington Township Committee instituted the “pay-as-you-throw” program for curbside pick-up.  Prior to this program, each homeowner was responsible for contracting and paying directly with a garbage hauler for curbside service.  With the pay-as-you-throw program, the Township bids for curbside pick-up and hauling every 3 to 5 years and awards a contract to the lowest responsible bidder.  We are presently in the 4th year of the Township’s contract with Raritan Valley Disposal.  The contract amount is included in the Municipal Budget and, therefore, part of the municipal levy.  The purpose of the pay-as-you-throw program was to encourage recycling which would minimize the amount of household trash put out to curb.  The fee paid for stickers represents the “tipping” fee at the transfer station.  A conscientious recycling effort decreases the amount of trash, thus the amount of stickers needed.

2. Cart Program

RVD also offers residents the option for the use of a cart for a monthly or quarterly fee.  Different sizes are available based on your household needs.  The cost of the cart would depend on the size that you decide best suits your household needs.  You would be billed directly from RVD for this service and the full cost of the cart would be the responsibility of the property owner.  Many people make this choice for the convenience of having a trash cart on wheels, to minimize birds/animals getting into your trash and to eliminate the need to purchase stickers.  This is an additional service that a homeowner can choose and is not covered by the Township’s contract.

If you are presently enrolled in the “cart” program for your household trash and would like to switch to the “pay-as-you-throw” program, just call RVD at 908-730-7800 and cancel your cart service.

The new recycling carts are for “single-stream” recycling which allows co-mingling of all recyclables into one container.  This means you can throw glass, cardboard, plastics, aluminum, newspaper, beverage metal, junk mail and magazines into one recycling cart.

The MyRepublicRewards program has been delayed until mid-April, but because of the delay each household that signs onto the program when it becomes available will automatically receive 300 points.  Each household will receive a postcard soon from MyRepublicRewards explaining the process to register for the rewards program.

We again thank you for your patience as we work together to implement this new program!
